The History of Ooltewah, Tennessee

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Tennessee, Ooltewah boasts a rich history that whispers of Native American settlements, Civil War skirmishes, and a bygone county seat. Its name, shrouded in mystery, might hold meanings like "principal ground" or the charming "Owls Nest," hinting at the town's deep connection to its surroundings.

Long before European settlers arrived, Ooltewah's lands were likely home to thriving Native American communities. Traces of their presence linger in the name Wolftever Creek, a testament to the Wolf family who settled here in the 1840s.

The year 1859 marked a turning point for Ooltewah. The arrival of the railroad, the Hiwassee or East Tennessee & Georgia Railroad, spurred the town's growth. F.P. Watkins and William Stone, who owned the land where the railroad passed, witnessed the town blossom. This connection transformed Ooltewah into a bustling mining town in the 1880s, fueled by the iron ore extracted from White Oak Mountain.

Ooltewah's significance reached new heights when it became the county seat of James County. The grand testament to this era is the former James County Courthouse, a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it serves as a charming tea room and event space, keeping the memory of James County alive.

However, in 1919, due to financial difficulties, James County was incorporated into Hamilton County. While Ooltewah's reign as a county seat ended, the town persevered, retaining its historical character and small-town charm.

Today, Ooltewah thrives as a developing community, striking a balance between embracing progress and cherishing its historical roots. The town offers residents a haven of scenic beauty and a peaceful atmosphere, a testament to its enduring spirit.
